I submit that one of the most motivating statements of Rashi is found in this week's Parsha. Hashem gives orders to Moshe to wage a war of vengeance on Midian and forewarns him that after the battle, the curtains would be drawn. He would die. Is there a greater cause for excuses than wanting to live?! Was this not the perfect time for Moshe to decide to go to med. school? Rashi tells us, however, that despite the fact that his death depended on this war, Moshe carried out his orders "happily and without delay." No excuses.
How do we react when the call of duty is upon us? Do we approach the opportunity to do a mitzvah, give tzedakah, or go to shul with any enthusiasm? How many times have we ourselves said "I'd love to, but..." or "I know it's important, but...". One thing's for sure, we have Moshe Rabbeinu to aspire to, and to that let us say Ashreinu!
