Parshas Korach

The Mishna in Avos cites the case of Korach against Moshe as the example of an argument that is "sh'lo l'shem shamayim" - not for Hashem's sake. While there may be many motives for entering an argument, the ba'al machlokes only has one - to get attention. It's a machlokes that is "l'shem atzmo" - for his sake. Regarding communal debate, especially amongst Rabbanim, the Chazon Ish writes: it is better to be the loser than the winner.
